The quick answer would be ”because it’s interesting”, however, it doesn’t fully explain the sheer abundance of it. Whether it’s drama or comedy, someone has to be in conflict with someone or something. It’s the basis of storytelling. Of course, conflict makes for interesting stories but most of our days are filled with normalcy, routine, and cooperation.
Entertainment industry makes it seem the world is filled with conflict when in fact, the normal state of being is not being in conflict. Perhaps that’s why there’s such a demand for conflict. Our lives are so void of conflict, we crave to experience it vicariously.
However, at times people just want to relax and enjoy a bit of calm and balance. It’s surprising there aren’t more ’feel good’ series and movies out there. Looking at my Netflix feed, the majority of shows feature blood, devastation, death, war, and horror – just like the Monty Python sketch from several decades ago. If you’re in the mood for something that doesn’t make your heart rate go up and your mind experience a small state of panic, your choices are very limited.
